[Sci-fi/SR] Temporary Strain Reduction?

#1 Postby Freemage » Wed Jan 11, 2017 5:17 pm

Say you have a cybernetically enhanced character with d10 in both Vigor and Spirit, who has 10 Strain of cybernetics. He gets hit with Lower Trait to Spirit, with a Raise.

Now that he has Spirit d6, would this lower his Strain to 6 (instantly killing him, since he's got 4 more points of Strain than that)?

For that matter, if a cybernetic character suffers a permanent loss to Vigor or Spirit from some effect, does that lower Max Strain (thereby potentially dropping the character to -2 Fatigue on a single die-drop)?

Nope. Temporary adjustments to Spirit/Vigor do not impact Strain (neither lowering nor raising). It's based off the character's inherent Traits.

Not sure what the "single die-drop" would be to cause a permanent loss of a Trait, since (unless I'm missing something that affects both sources) really the only way for that to occur is through a permanent injury which would require five dice rolls: an attack roll, damage roll, specific result on the Vigor roll to make it permanent, another specific result on the Injury roll, followed by a second specific Injury roll to affect Vigor (and it can't affect Spirit).

But yeah, if Vigor wasn't higher than Spirit, then a permanent loss would reduce Strain and cause Fatigue if the character had maxed out their Strain usage to the max or within 1 point. The character would either have to have the excess cyberware removed or use an advance to increase Vigor a die type back to its original level. Or, if available (as in SR), the simplest solution would be to just have someone with Greater Healing remove the injury, restoring the die type (which would take a "single die-drop" ;)).

Hope that helps.
